What's In The Box?

The crate I shipped from Syracuse, NY, finally arrived this weekend.

What's in the box?

A 52" LCD 1080P HDTV. The TV belonged to my brother and since my mother didn't have any use for it, I decided to take it. I had to ship it via a shipping company that didn't offer insurance. I was uneasy about shipping this very expensive item with any coverage, but I decided just to take a chance. If it broke, it broke. Luckily ... it didn't.

So I have a new toy to keep me busy. I am giving my old 32" LCD HDTV to my sister so I have to ship that out to her in a couple of weeks.

My iPhone 3G: 5 Weeks Later ...

It has been 5 weeks since I got my iPhone, and I am really enjoying it. At first I couldn't get used to the touch typing, even-though I used it last year. But after a day or so I was typing with very quick with one finger, and now I am typing with two thumbs with few errors. I thought I would just briefly give my thoughts on some of the features new iPhone 3G.

Battery Life

I find that I have to recharge my phone every two or so. I don't do a lot of talking on my phone because I mostly communicate via text messaging and email. When I do talk for long periods of time the battery lasts for about 6 hours. Even-though the phone uses at&t's 3G network, I still keep my phone on Edge network because the 3G drains too much battery life. I use 3G only when I catch get a wireless signal or when I get less than 3 bars the Edge network.

MobileMe

MobileMe has been a disaster since day one. I have no idea what Apple was thinking when decided to launch this service without fully testing it. In theory, the whole idea is great; but in practice it failed to live up to it's claim. The claim that all your devices would be synced up with "push" technology so when, for example, an email is received all you computers and iPhone connected to MobileMe would get the new message instantly. Yeah ... that didn't happen. Apple later admitted that this was true, and gave users a free month of service. They are still working the kinks out of the system, and hopefully things will be working as advertised in a month or so.

App Store

The App Store is pretty good. There are some good things you can, but right now it is mostly bad. I bought Sega's Super Monkey Ball, and got a couple App for free like Twinkle. I added a Twitter site to my blog and Twinkle allows me to update where ever I am. Like MobileMe, it still has to work out some of the bugs.

Email & Internet

It is very convenient that I can check my email accounts without being in front of a computer and have use of a full keyboard. Since most of my communication takes place via email, it really helps me stay in touch. The full Internet browser makes is easy to search websites. All this comes in handy when you need something right away.

I am glad I got my phone and I ended up getting one for my buddy SuperBlu superboy for his birthday because I liked it so much. I think he cried when I told him about his gift ... but I can't confirm that ... nor will he probably admit to it.

I just recently decided to update my phone to make it stand out more:

I got this M.C. Escher skin from a Canadian store called Gelaskin.com. It was easy to apply and it is removable with any damage to the phone in case I want to change it. I like it for now but eventually I will change for someone else.

Gadgetry: My iPhone 3G

my iphone 3g

This past Friday was the first day the Apple iPhone 3G went on sale. I thought I would go to the AT&T store a block away from my office around 7:45am to see the length of the line. The line was wrapped around the building with nearly 200 people. I wasn't going to wait so i headed to work.

While at work, I was reading some tech blogs saw some reports that people were waiting for hours because the iTunes server crashed and phones couldn't be activated. Some people were sent home with unactivated phones, and first generation phones were being disabled after upgrading to the 2.0 software. Needless to say, the first day was a mess.

After I finished with tennis I thought I would head to the Apple store on Knox Street in Highland Park, because I figured the line would have died down a bit. I got there around 9:30pm there were about 70 people in line. I was in line for about 10 minutes before a n employee at Apple store store announced to crowd that only the next 50 people were going to be served. He apologized to those waiting in line and those disappointed after waiting line for over two hours could come back tomorrow. I hadn't been there for too long so I didn't mind. I went to grab some food before heading home.

The next day I went to same Apple store around 6:45am and I was the 10th person in line. I brought my iBook and some other provisions to keep myself occupied while I waited for the doors to open at 8am. The people in line were really nice and we all talked about the all the issues that took place with the new iPhones the day before.

The doors opened and I was in the second wave of service. When I finally got in to get my phone I had to make a decision on which phone to get. I initially wanted the black 16gb version, but I changed my mind and got the white version of the same size. The white version didn't show smudges when touched and it looked more chic. I got my phone and was at the register ... and that's when I ran into problems.

I was one of many people at the store having issues with their existing AT&T account. I switched to AT&T 8 days prior and I an employee discount on my account and this cause problems. After talking to AT&T for nearly and hour they could not get my phone activated because of my employee discount. In order to get the iPhone at the $299 price, I would had to leave the store and head to an AT&T store and return my old phone and remove the discount. I was not leaving Apple store without an iPhone, so I asked the AT&T representative would I be able to get the phone if I added a new line to my account and canceled the old line at a later date. She said, "technically, that should work." I tried it out, and it worked and I got the phone for $299. I paid for the iPhone, and it was on to the next step ... activating it on iTunes. The process too about 2 minutes and I was out of there. I headed to AT&T store near my house to return my old phone but I was to forced to use the new number that was given to my iPhone instead of retained the number I received 8 days ago.

So, I got my iPhone and I am enjoying it. I already made a couple of ringtones for it just so I wouldn't have to use the default tones. I asked the Apple specialist if she is getting a free iPhone 3G for being an employee. I was told that she wasn't. I think all Apple employees and the AT&T reps deserve to get one for dealing with the needlessly complicated process.

Due to all of the restrictions, the Apple store I went to only sold about 400 iPhones on launch day. Last year, they probably sold that many iPhones in an hour. AT&T should allowed perspective iPhone owners to pre-register online, print out a receipt with a confirmation code or barcode, and bring it to store. You had to bring a Photo ID and give your Social Security Number, so the process would have seemed secured.

The process is flawed, but it worked out in the end. I will post my review of the phone next week.

So You Want To Go Faster?

I saw a commercial a couple of days ago for Time Warner Cable offering 10 Mbps Internet connections. When I got my service in September they didn't offer that. So I called and asked, how much would it be to upgrade me from 6 Mb?ps to 10Mbps?

"$3.00"

It was an offer I couldn't refuse.

HD Format War: Blu-ray Wins

Well, folks ... it is official.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080219/ap_on_bi_ge/japan_toshiba
http://www.toshiba.co.jp/about/press/2008_02/pr1903.htm

Toshiba has bowed out of the HD format competition with Sony's Blu-ray. It was Sony's race to lose considering that they had the most leverage.

1) Sony's Playstation 3 contained a Blu-ray drive
2) Sony and Walt Disney went exclusively Blu-ray
3) Blockbuster video went to Blu-ray
4) Netflix and Wal-mart decided to go exclusively Blu-ray a couple of weeks ago

I recently acquired a Playstation 3 and I must say I have been impressed with Blu-ray. In the past I have been adamantly against Sony products because their exclusive formats (ATRAC, MiniDisc, etc...) rarely survive. Also I had a Sony DVD player it died two weeks have the warranty expired.

After several losses (Betamax vs. VHS, ATRAC vs. MP3), Sony seems to be back on top. HD DVD prices will fall dramatically because retailers will be trying to get rid of all the discontinued merchandise. I think I may stock up on some HD DVDs if the prices fall below $10.

Since the format war is over, would you now consider buying a Blu-ray player?

Black Friday Came Early

This past Friday was a "secret" sale at Wal-mart. Secret is the operative word. Can you really have a secret sale if you are promoting it on television and in adverts? I found about this sale on engadgethd.com and with the offer of an Toshiba HD DVD Player for $98.87, I knew I had to get one. Well the truth is that I got one 3 weeks prior from Amazon.com and it cost about $220, so I got this one so I can return the other back to Amazon.

The sale was suppose to start at 8 a.m. today so I decided it was best to get there 30 to 45 minutes beforehand. Luckily there is a Wal-mart two blocks from where I work so I wouldn't be too late arriving to working. On my way to the store I called my sister because she wanted to get a laptop for my nephew. I wasn't sure if people would be camped out for these deals, so I told her I would do my best to try and get one.

I finally arrive and the parking lot seemed a bit busy, so I rushed in the store to lay claim to my bounty. As I walk into the store, I saw a woman walking out with the HD DVD player I wanted. I asked if there any more in stock, to which she said "a few." I ran to the electronics department only to find no one there. There were two DVD players and 15 laptops left, so I grabbed one of each and made my way to the register. I also saw the new Sony Playstation 3 on sale, but I had no interest in that. The cashier rang up my sale while text messaging on his phone. Success. I called my sister to let her know that I got the laptop. I contemplated whether I should hit up another Wal-mart nearby for stock up on HD DVD players, but I decided against it because I didn't want to be late for work.

When I arrived to work, I stashed my bounty in the trunk of my car. I made sure no one was around so they wouldn't get any ideas before I made my way to my office.

7:50 a.m.

I managed to get to work ten minutes earlier on this busy morning when I am normally fifteen minutes late. To kill some time I began to skim the pages of Tennis magazine.

Socks. I forgot to get a pack of socks while at Wal-mart.

I knew I would forget something.

iPhone: I Caved

After my post about not getting an iPhone, I ended up getting one this morning.

I saw that the iPhone was still available at my local Apple Store and they opened at 9 am today. I walked over at 8:50 and was the 8th person in line at 8:57. I got the phone in about 10 minutes.

I have to say that I am quite impressed with the iPhone thus far. I will test it out for 14 days and see whether I should keep it. I have 30 days to cancel the AT&T contract without penalty.I will do a full review when I get home later...maybe.

Apple iPhone: I Think I Will Wait

Until today, there was no information regarding the rate plans or the activation fees for the iPhone. Below are said fees:

I was really considering getting an iPhone this Friday when the product launches. My plan was to get the phone and test it out for a couple of weeks, and then return it if I didn't like it. I recently found out that there is a $175 termination fee to do this, so it's not cost effective to do this.

I really don't to switch from Sprint to AT&T because I've been hearing that their network (EDGE) is inferior to Sprint's network. Also, my Sprint bill roughly $35 per month and it took a call to sprint last year to get this deal, so I really don't want to lose it. AT&T called me a couple of months ago trying to get me to switch, but the new iPlan is firm and has not room for wiggle room.

Hopefully the Apple Store a couple of blocks from my apartment will get an iPhone that a potential buyer could actually touch and then determine whether or not it is the right device for them. Then, who knows? But more than likely I will wait for a year and let me Sprint contract run out and then see if the iPhone is for me.

I will save my money for the new iMac I'll buy when Mac OS X: Leopard comes out in October. I will probably get more use out of the iMac then the iPhone ... and the in the long run, the iMac is cheaper.

Who's getting an iPhone? Leave a comment.

Gadgetry: My TiVo Series 3 HD Media Recorder

Last week I found out that Charter Cable finally added The Tennis Channel to their current lineup, and I immediately called to get this service. Along with The Tennis Channel, I decided to get the HD DVR package ... just because. After the installer came and left, but not before lecturing me that my Monster surge protector/line filter was waste of money, I indulged in the HD goodness. Then I remembered why I got rid of the HD DVR last year ... interface totally sucks compared to TiVo. The next day I end up getting the TiVo Series 3 HD Media Recorder from Amazon.com.

I hooked it up to my cheap $9 antenna that I got from Radio Shack last year and set it to record Law & Order and Saturday Night Live in HD before heading to Austin, TX for the weekend. When I returned home, I was blown away by the quality of the recordings. I usually download shows in HD off the Internet because I couldn't record them ... but never again.

I had Charter Cable at my apartment yesterday to install two CableCards in my TiVo (which only cost $1.50 per card to lease) in order to receive the HD and Digital cable channels. As of right now, its not working because the installer can't read and gave HQ the wrong information to activate my CableCards. I will have to call today and fix the issue because I am missing a lot of good tennis matches.

So far it is economical because if I kept the Charter HD DVR my bill would increased by $37. With the HD TiVo box, my bill is $15 cheaper and I get more services. Over the life of the box it will eventually pay for itself.

Hopefully but tomorrow everything will be straightened out and I can veg out on my couch this weekend watching television. But I have a tennis tournament so, I don't know if it will be possible unless I lose ... and I am trying to avoid that.

theIRS

I finally paid my taxes yesterday to beat the deadline. I actually completed my taxes in February but didn't file them when I found out I owed some money to the government. I decided to delay paying the FEDS until the last possible moment. I got some points by putting it the charge on my credit card, so at least I got something in return.

I am thinking about refiling my taxes for the 2003, 2004, and 2005 because there were some deductions I didn't take advantage of. I think I missed out on refund amounts totaling $1000. I will probably look over the amounts this weekend and see if it worth completed that tedious 1040X form. If the amount of the refund is enough to get the new Series 3 HD TiVo, it would work it.

Amazon.com has this TiVo with as $170 rebate and it will bring the total cost from $799 plus tax (via tivo.com) to $459 w/ no sales tax and free shipping.

I will probably get it in June when my 1 year contract expires for my Series 2 Dual Tuner Tivo. If I get it, I would be the owner of 3 TiVos. More than likely I would take TiVo #1 offline to make room for TiVo #3. I think I might sell it on eBay or hack into for fun.

YOU HAVE 7 HOURS AND 40 MINUTES (CST)TO COMPLETE YOUR TAXES!!!

Gadgets: Xbox 360 Elite

I know I don't need this, but I want it because my first Xbox is starting to died on me. The are a number of reason why I think I should get the new Xbox:
  1. To play Sega: Virtual Tennis 3 in 1080p (more info)
  2. The ability to download HD television shows and movies
  3. HD-DVD
The new Xbox April 27th in the US and Canada, so I have a month to think about this purchase. If I get that new position I mentioned last week, then I will buy the new Xbox as a gift to myself ... since I don't have anyone special to buy gifts for me. I need to find a wealthy benefactor to enable my need for high-tech gadgets.

I star in a new reality show called, "Who Wants To Buy Me A Lot of Stuff?" Do you think LOGO or MTV is interested in a show like this?

Wii Belong Together

So this is what I got myself to lift my spirits after the accident. But it was an ordeal just get the darn thing.

I got it on 1/21/07 on the tip that most of the retail stores were hoarding the new Nintendo Wii since Christmas. I was determined to get one.

I was up at 5:30am and I headed the the Target about .5 miles from my house. I got there and no one was around. I waited for 15 minutes and decided to head to Best Buy. I got to Best Buy and there were 3 people that have been there since midnight and were sleeping in their car. The only reason I went to Target is that they opened at 7am and Best Buy opened at 11am. I told the people waiting that Target should have some and they opened 4 hours earlier.

I headed back to Target and I was the only person there waiting for a Wii. Around 6:30am another car arrived and we waited in front of the store. Ten minutes before the store was due to open, the manager walked in and I asked if they were selling the Wii. He checked out the information, and regretfully informed me that no Targets in the area were selling the Wii. I was tired and I figured it was too late to go back to Best Buy because the line would be too long. During the car ride back home I changed my mind and decided to head to Best Buy. I grabbed some snacks, water, my laptop with DVDs and hauled it over to Best Buy.

When I arrived at 7:45am, I saw that there were only 10 or so people in line. It was chilly outside so I wore thermal underwear and my thick University at Buffalo sweater. I was quite warm. I found a place in the back of the line and got comfortable. Tickets weren't being handed out until 10am so I watch "Strangers With Candy" for the tenth time and listened to my iPod. When the ticket were handed out at 10am, I was number 13 and there were 48 units at this particular Best Buy. But the wait wasn't over ... we still had to wait outside until 11am. I stayed in line because the store only had 20 extra remotes and nunchuck controllers even thought I was guaranteed a Wii.

At 11am, the rush started.

Actually, it was pretty well organized. No one cut the line, and everyone remained calm. I didn't want to have to cut a bitch in a Best Buy if they tired to get ahead of me, so it was good all around. I got my extra remote, nunchuck controller, and Zelda game and headed to the register. I was in and out of the store in 10 minutes. I like to get what I want and get the hell out.

So that is now I got my Wii. I haven't had much time to play it but when I did play, it was for a couple of hours each time. I got it because I figured if I got tired of it I could always sell it on eBay. It will be sold out until May or June so someone will be looking to buy one before then.

Randomness: There was this queen (read: gay guy) who drove up to some of us waiting in line around 10:30am and asked if were in line for the Wii. We said we were, and he countered with:

"Y'all are standing in line for hours for a video game. Life is too short for that."

The funny thing was he was looking to get the Wii as well, but since he was too lazy to get in line he decided to demean us?

What the cock was that all about!

I will post a picture of my Mii when I get the chance.

Gadgetry: The Apple iPhone

The Apple iPhone has made its debut at the MacWorld Conference and I must have it. Okay, I don't really have to have it, but I would love to have it. The only bad thing is that it will only be available for Cingular customers in June. I don't like my current provider Sprint, but I like them more than Cingular. I wouldn't wish Cingular service on my worst enemy. The new iPhone will cost $499 for the 4Gb model, and $599 for the 8Gb model.

I will wait until the 2nd or 3rd generation before I buy an iPhone. Hopefully buy then there will be a Sprint version. In September I have a feeling that a new touch screen iPod will debut, so I will save my money for that.

iPhone may not be its official name since Apple is now being sued by Cisco because they own the name "iphone." They just could call it the [apple logo]phone and be done with it. But I guess they like iPhone better.

Gadgetry: Panasonic DVDS52S DVD Player

I have been using my Xbox as my main DVD player for the past 1.5 years, but I think the drive is failing due to overuse. After doing some research I decided to get the Panasonic DVDS52S player because it got good reviews from various reviewers.

The best thing about the player is that it up-converts to DVDs to 720p or 1080i resolution to near HD quality. My HDTV has a max resolution of 1080i using a HDMI cable, so I decided to take advantage of this feature. After configuring the player I decided to use Disney's Aladdin and Dreamworks' Shrek to test the video quality. The video quality is amazing. The video is so detailed it looks like the images are popping out toward you.

The player is currently priced under $100, and it has great video quality for such a low price. I will eventually move to a High Definition DVD player but I plan on waiting 3 or so years because of the competing HD-DVD and Blueray formats. One will eventually become the standard, ie.: VHS v. BETA, so I will wait until one dies off.

Ready To Launch: Playstation 3

Tomorrow is the official launch of the new Playstation 3 console in the US. I am thinking about waiting in line tonight in order to get one. I don't really want it, but it would definitely resell it on Ebay to make a profit. I have a half day at work tomorrow so I could do it.

But do I really want to wait out in the cold for something I really don't want?
